Production Role Definitions

Director

Reports to Artistic Director

The Director is the artistic leader of a production or residency workshop. They are responsible for shaping the creative vision of the project, guiding the collaborative process, and creating a supportive, exploratory

environment for all artists involved. Directors at The Larking House are expected to center playwrights, uplift process, and foster inclusive rehearsal rooms.

Designer

Reports to Technical Director and Director

The Designer is a technical designer in scenic, lighting, sound, video, costumes, makeup, properties, paint, or another relevant field. They are responsible for assisting the Director in fulfilling their artistic vision for the production. Their presence is required during production meetings and tech week. 

Assistant Director

Reports to Director

The Assistant Director (AD) supports the Director and the production process by observing, contributing ideas, and managing behind-the-scenes logistics. This role offers early-career artists or interested collaborators the opportunity to learn through immersion and engagement in new play development and rehearsal practices. 

Intimacy, Fight, and Dance Directors

Reports to the Director

They are responsible for upholding the Director's vision and maintaining a safe rehearsal environment. They are a vital part of communicating artistic ideas through a regimented and structured practice. Safety is our number one priority in the rehearsal room, they are the safeguards in this standard. 

Stage Manager

Reports to Artistic Director and Director

The Stage Manager (SM) is the central communicator and organizational leader of the production. They are responsible for scheduling, note-taking, tracking blocking and cues, and ensuring the production stays on track throughout rehearsals, tech, and performance. The SM is also a vital presence for maintaining safety, professionalism, and equity in the room. 

Marketing / Media Coordinator

Reports to Artistic Director

The Marketing Coordinator is responsible for elevating a production's visibility in the community. This includes social media marketing, design materials, coordinating photo call / media call days, etc.
