SYNOPSIS
Set in a courtroom in a corner of Purgatory called Hope, the play imagines a trial to determine the fate of Judas Iscariot, the disciple who betrayed Jesus. A mix of historical, biblical, and fictional characters—including Satan, Mother Teresa, Sigmund Freud, and Jesus—testify for and against Judas. Blending dark comedy, philosophy, and raw emotion, the play explores themes of guilt, forgiveness, justice, and the possibility of redemption, questioning whether even the most condemned soul deserves mercy.

JUDAS ISCARIOT
Any Gender / 20-40
A former disciple of Jesus, and his betrayer. The defendant on trial for his crimes. Devastated and catatonic for the bulk of the show. Raw, honest and the emotional nucleus of the play's argument. Looking for an actor with stamina, unwavering commitment and intense vulnerability. Must be ok with intimacy work.
FABIANA AZIZA CUNNINGHAM
Female / 25-45
A whip smart and unyielding defense attorney for Judas Iscariot. Physically attractive and the object of El-Fayoumy's slimy attempts at affections. Has everything to prove and will do anything to win her case. A Juggernaut of a role that demands someone that can bear the weight of the show and drive home the core of their argument. Must have stamina and strong ability to memorize quickly.
YUSEF EL-FAYOUMY
Male / 25-45 / Middle Eastern
The Prosecutor, and the equivalent of a used car salesman. Wholly unserious, but at times a shockingly good attorney. Generally a slime-ball especially when it comes to Cunningham. Must have great comedic timing, strong stamina onstage, and be able to memorize quickly. Must be comfortable with utilizing an Egyptian or Egyptian adjacent accent.
JUDGE LITTLEFIELD
Male / 35-55
The Judge of these proceedings. A former confederate soldier doing his due diligence as he waits for his admission papers to Heaven to process. Pervasively annoyed and incredibly prickly. Must have strong comedic timing, strong stamina onstage and be able to memorize quickly. Must be comfortable with utilizing a southern accent. Could possibly double as Caiaphus the Elder.
THE BALIFF
Any Gender / 20-40
Just a friendly guy doing his job. Incredibly likable foil to Littlefield. Must have great comedic timing and be a great active listener onstage. Can possibly double for Simon the Zealot.
JESUS OF NAZARETH
Any Gender / 20-40
Is primarily present as an onlooker, but must be able to actively listen throughout the proceedings. His presence is felt and not heard. Devoted to bringing Judas home to Heaven. Looking for an actor with great empathy, intense vulnerability and a quiet influence. Must have deep and unmistakable chemistry with Judas. Must be ok with Intimacy work.
SATAN
Any Gender / 20-40
The Prince of Darkness. Arrives mostly to shake things up from the witness stand. Charming, witty, and mean as hell. Lives and dies by scorched earth policy. Ultimately, correct in his assessment of most things. Must have an undeniable stage presence.
HENRIETTA ISCARIOT
Female / 50-75
Judas Iscariot's mother. Sympathetic and devastated that her Son resides in Hell.
ST. MONICA
Female / 20-40 / BIPOC
The Patron Saint of Mothers. Enters with style and confidence. Looking for a strong character actor with impeccable comedic timing & the ability to command the stage. Considering non-white actors only.
GLORIA
Female / 20-40 / BIPOC
An angel residing in Purgatory. A member of the jury. Is familiar with the neighborhood and its inhabitants. Likable, street-smart and in-the-know. Considering non-white actors only.
BUTCH HONEYWELL
Male / 25-40
A member of the jury. A regular guy it seems. Doesn't know he is dead. Must be vulnerable and honest. Must be adept at memorizing long speeches.
CAIAPHUS THE ELDER
Male / 20-40
The High Priest of the Sanhedrin. Traditional and staunch in his values and beliefs.
PONTIOUS PILATE
Male / 30-50
The Governor and primary military leader of Judea at the time of Jesus' crucifixion. Charismatic and powerful.
MOTHER TERESA
Female / 60 - 70
The iconic Catholic Nun known for her kindness and generosity. Must be comfortable with using an Albanian or Albanian adjacent accent.
SIGMUND FREUD
Male / 30-50
An Austrian Neurologist and the founder of Psychoanalysis. Easily rage-baited. Must be comfortable using an Austrian accent.
SIMON THE ZEALOT
Male / 25-50
One of the 12 Apostles, and a member of the "Zealots", a group of avenging priests.
